When I think of two products that contain such harmful ingredients that I would like everyone to “go green” on, I think of anti-perspirant and sunscreen.
The Skinny on Chemical Sunscreens
Conventional sunscreens, also called “chemical sunscreens” contain chemicals such as oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and octinoxate (not to mention parabens, fragrance, phthalates, and multiple ethoxylated ingredients), which are used to filter ultraviolet radiation. If it’s not obvious already, applying chemicals to “protect” your skin is trading one bad thing for another.
Many of the chemicals commonly used in sunscreen are endocrine disruptors, estrogenic and may interfere with thyroid and other hormone processes in the body. Not cool right!? There is also a lot of research to suggest that Vitamin A derivative, retinol palmitate (found in most chemical sunscreens), speeds up the growth of cancerous cells.
Okay, so we know that chemical sunscreens are bad for us, but what do we do? I’m here to tell you that there are amazing alternatives that actually work! There are “physical” sunscreens that use minerals (zinc oxide and titanium dioxide), which protect your skin beautifully. In our August Mapleblume box we included the Natural Moisturizing Face Sunscreen & Primer from Suntegrity. It’s a gorgeous, lightweight, and hydrating sunscreen that has no harmful ingredients, in fact, it’s actually good for your skin!

A great resource to check the quality of your sunscreen is the Environmental Working Group (EWG) Skin Deep Sunscreen Guide which comes out each year.

Some of you may remember an old TV commercial (though I cannot recall what they were advertising), the slogan has stuck with me.
“When you look good, you feel good. When you feel good, you look great!”
These are words that make a lot of sense and that we can live by. Yet I have now found it rings truer than ever before when it comes to the clean and natural beauty products that I use on my body.
